I had lunch today at Il Gattopardo at 33W 54th Street in New York - just of 5th Avenue opposite the Museum of Modern Art. What a great place - good food although not cheap by any means.
The restaurant is down a small flight of stairs and is long and thin with around 30 tables arranged down the outsides of the room - at the back there is a covered conservatory which houses another 4 or 5 tables - which is where we sat. This area was quiet and very light and airy.
The staff were very attentive and not pushy with the bottled water as some New York restaurants are. I ate with a colleague and we started with a vegetable soup and I had fresh mozzarella and raddicio. I had the mozzarella and salad and my colleague had the soup. My salad was well seasoned and the mozzarella was beautiful and creamy with no biter aftertaste that you can sometime get.
For our main course my colleague had a meatball lasagna which he admitted that he had had the previous day as well and he thoroughly recommended it and it looked very tasty. I had a mushroom Risotto which I have to say is one of the best I have had. It was served on a large plate and it was spread out quite thinly - not big dollops as some restaurants do. It tasted superb and had just the right texture - creamy and slightly chewy.
We ended with coffees and home made Biscotti.
The whole meal came to $100 which I guess in New York is not bad and in London I guess it would have been double that.
So 5 out of 5 for this restaurant - highly recommended.
